I’m not even trying to lose weight for the New Year this time around.

Never mind that I’m waddling into 2009 about eight months pregnant, so weight loss is pretty much an intangible dream right now. The reality is, I’ve lived through New Year’s resolutions long enough to know that wanting to lose 10 pounds in January isn’t the same as actually doing it.

Of course we want to lose weight for the New Year. We’ve spent so long gorging on cut-out cookies and veggie dip that the idea of nothing but brown rice and fruit actually sounds appealing. The problem is, healthy food tends to lose its appeal far sooner than junk food does. Hence the reason we’re back to wings and dip by the Super Bowl.

The problem with most New Year’s resolutions is that they’re way too big-picture. Sure, we want to be 15 pounds lighter by swimsuit season — but that’s really hard to envision when we’re decked out in turtlenecks and Ugg boots, shoveling our latest gift from Mother Nature.

And yes, it absolutely makes sense to balance our checkbooks regularly, make it to church every Sunday or set aside a few hours a week to help out at the soup kitchen. They’re all worthy goals. But the problem is, we have to actually change our regular habits and carve out time for the new stuff.

Then there are the vague resolutions: “I vow to be a better friend.” Or the resolutions that are out of our control: “I resolve to get a raise at work.”

Last year, my husband and I — both task-oriented individuals — made a point of setting up very specific New Year’s resolutions. Things like “We will spend every Tuesday night together” or “We will go out to dinner by ourselves once a week.”

For a few months, it worked. Our friends were amazed that we managed to get out on weekly date nights. Then, sometime in early summer, the baby sitter couldn’t make it. Then we got sick. And before we knew it, we had to wrack our brains to remember our last, honest-to-goodness date.

With a new baby on the way, I know better than to assume date nights are going to resume anytime soon. But there are a few resolutions I can make for 2009 that I’m fairly certain will hold:

I resolve to enjoy every last piece of chocolate that heads my way.

I resolve to partake in Sunday afternoon naps as frequently as possible.

I resolve to be back at the gym six weeks after having my baby. This one is actually easier than it sounds — the gym has both child care and showers, the two things a new mom wants most.

I resolve to shamelessly devour at least one gossip mag every six weeks, while I’m getting my hair done.

And finally: I resolve to spend at least one day in my pajamas, eating pancakes for lunch.

That’s more than a resolution in my book: That’s a staple for sanity.

Student hurt during bad weather

In spite of hourly checks last week of the campus status information page as well as my eden mail for a possible note from my professor, I realized there was, in fact, class. Another 20 feet or so down the central path that leads right up to Murray Hall, I was feeling good. Slippery, yes, but I was walking slowly and carefully. One of the same good Samaritans asked, “Where are you going? Do you need help?” I assured him I would be fine to make it to Murray — which I was, as it was only about ten feet away.

Finally reaching the inside of the building, I shook off the cold and realized, holy mother of God, my wrist hurt! Looking down, I noticed my wrist was about the size of a baseball and rather lumpy. Having come this far, I walked upstairs and told my professor that I was afraid I had hurt myself and would like to go get checked out. He, very graciously, let me leave class. I crossed the quad without incident this time, noticing that the University had finally decided to do something about the snow; there was a pickup truck plowing the walk. No salt, just plow. I then walked to the hospital in a great deal of pain.

It is now two hours later and I have just arrived home from Robert Wood Johnson ER, where the nice orthopedic doctors took my x-rays and were kind enough to diagnose me with a fractured wrist — all because the University was too cavalier with their weather preparations. Who needs salt when you can plow? Sand? Pfft! We laugh at your amateur desire for traction. I cannot fathom that I am the only person who had an issue with this Wednesday, given the predilection of the female student body for fashionable yet wholly unsafe Ugg boots.

Some industries grow and profit despite the recession; others don’t

The really dismal year is showing up on the bottom line of many public companies.

CHELTENHAM, Md.: “Marissa, wake up! It’s Christmas!” Those are the words I woke up to on Christmas morning.

My little brother Anthony came running in my room shouting those words. Did I mention that he is 18, a freshman in college, and in no way should be so excited about waking his almost 22-year-old sister up at 7:30 on Christmas morning?

I love Christmas just as much as anyone, but 7:30 a.m.? Come on!

Okay … who am I kidding? I LOVE Christmas, and maybe I was secretly awake at 6 a.m. Christmas morning waiting for the rest of the family to wake up. So, I guess I was not so upset about the 7:30 a.m. “wakeup.”

See, Anthony and I are big kids when it comes to Christmas. Yes, we still make Christmas lists and anxiously await to see what things Santa brings us on Christmas morning. This Christmas was no different.

After I was forced out of bed, I calmly, in zombie-like fashion, walked (or ran) downstairs to open gifts. I must say, I was pretty excited and happy with the gifts Santa brought this year. I guess I was a good girl after all!

Finally, Santa brought me the Uggboots I have wanted oh so bad for the past year!

Nothing too exciting happened during dinner. The exciting stuff came after. See, I think I found my true calling in life. No, not basketball but a professional drummer!

My nephew got Rock Band for Christmas and I was probably more excited than him with his gift. I told him to bring it to my house so we could play after Christmas dinner. Well, all I can say is Travis Barker should watch out, he might just be dethroned as the best drummer after the skills I displayed.

I am not too sure if there are many people that can match the skills I displayed on the Rock Band drums. So, if basketball doesn’t work out for me, there is always Xbox360 and Rock Band.

Well, there are still a few hours of Christmas left, more importantly a few more hours for me to perfect my new craft! I hope everyone had a great Christmas, enjoyed their time with their family and received everything on their Christmas list! I love ugg boots .
